Is Filtered Water Really Better? & What to Look for in A Filter

Without giving it all away, absolutely YES! From the way it tastes to it’s profound health benefits, there’s no doubt about it, filtered water really is better. There are, however, a few important points to understand first…

From proper cell function and detoxification, to organ function, healthy skin, and a healthy digestive system, water is essential for so many reasons. We know we should be drinking plenty of water to be healthy, that’s common knowledge.

We often hear about the quantity of water we should be drinking and the recommended amounts we should drink each day, but have you thought about the quality of your water?

Quantity isn’t the only thing to consider about drinking water.

While it’s critical to be consuming the proper quantity of water, it is essential to consider the quality. In other words, the purity of your water.

Let’s take a look at what’s really in our tap water…

A 3-year study conducted by the Environmental Working Group found over 300 contaminants in tap water across the U.S. Three hundred unique contaminants. They state that “more than half of the chemicals detected are not subject to health or safety regulations and can legally be present in any amount.”

Here are a few examples of various contaminants and chemicals used as water treatments commonly found in tap water (there are many more!)

  • Chlorine
  • Fluoride
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Disinfectant Byproducts –when water is treated with chlorine, the result is disinfectant byproducts which have been proven to be even more dangerous than the chlorine itself. Includes trihalomethanes (THMs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and haloacetic acids (HAAs). THMs include chloroform and bromodichloromethane, both known cancer-causing chemicals.
  • Polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) includes Teflon
  • Micro-Organisms and Pathogenic Bacteria
  • Inorganic Minerals
  • Heavy Metals
  • Arsenic- click here for a map where arsenic levels are high in the U.S.
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • and more!

As you can see, there are quite a few chemicals in our water supply that we’d be better off without. This is why it is essential for us to make sure our drinking water is as pure as possible.

How do we do that? By using a water filter.

Now before you assume (like I did) that all filters are created equal, check out this table:

Is Filtered Water Really Better?

As you can see, not all filters are created equal.

Is Filtered Water Really Better? You might even be surprised to learn that the filter you’re using doesn’t perform as well as others (I know I did when I saw this chart for the first time)

Head to the store and you’ll probably find quite a few options for pitcher water filters… some say they reduce chlorine, some say they reduce vague ‘contaminants’… what does that actually mean, though?

The problem with these types of filters

In addition to reducing the harmful properties of our water, they also reduce the necessary minerals that we want to keep in our water. Not to mention they actually cost more in the long run because you have to replace them every few months (basically a lose-lose).

In addition, there are many different types of filters to choose from- reverse osmosis, distilled, tabletop filters, whole-house filtration systems, and more.

A note about reverse osmosis and distilled water: “most health experts that are up to date on current research are no longer recommending drinking RO or distilled water on a long-term basis because these methods remove all the beneficial minerals from the water making the water an acidic “hypotonic” solution.” (source)

Whole house water filtration systems can be a great option, but for many they aren’t accessible. If a whole-house filtration system isn’t in the budget right now, don’t worry.

The most powerful (and most cost-effective) counter-top water purifier is the Berkey Filter. The technology Berkey utilizes was developed, refined, and proven through years of investigative research and testing performed by leading specialists, researchers, and engineers. Here’s why I recommend it above other filters:

  1. Unlike many store bought water filters, the Berkey Filter removes the highest amounts of toxins while leaving the necessary minerals in the water. (This is key!)
  2. It has the ability to reduce fluoride up to 95% (with the fluoride attachment filters). *Exact reduction percentage may vary depending on water source.
  3. The Berkey Filters are extremely cost-effective, about 1.6 cents per gallon!
  4. The Berkey Filter can be used in an emergency or natural disaster to filter everything from pool water to creek or flood water (talk about powerful!)
  5. It far exceeds the water purifier standards of removing pathogenic bacteria, which distinguishes it as the only certifiable gravity flow water purification system.
  6. Berkey Filters produce the purest tasting water I’ve tasted!

Berkey’s systems are available in a variety of sizes, from 1.5 – 6 gallons. Please note that due to California law, Berkey is only able to ship their “outdoor” water purification systems to California. “Outdoor” systems include the Travel Berkey and Berkey Light. If you want the larger systems, you can always have a friend or family ship it to you from another state. 😉

I also use their shower filters, which I wrote a full post on, here.

Drinking pure, filtered water is essential for your health and to properly support your body’s natural detoxification processes. In fact, this is the first step I discuss in my eGuide “5 Easy Ways to Detox Daily”, which you can download here.

How pure is your drinking water? Do you use a water filter? If so, do you know how it compares?
