5 Easy Ways to Detox Daily (free guide!)

5 Easy Ways to Detox Daily

There’s no doubt about it: we are bombarded each and every day with a variety of harmful substances (aka ‘toxins’). Whether in our food, air, water, or personal care products and cosmetics, we are constantly being exposed to toxic substances. While each of us respond differently to these triggers (some may see immediate effects while others may not notice any effects for years), there’s no denying that our bodies need a little extra help to detox from these harmful substances.

Now, when I talk about ‘detoxifying’ the body I’m not talking about extreme dieting or fasting which deprives you of many essential nutrients. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Your body naturally detoxifies itself (that’s what your liver does!) but it often gets overloaded with everyday chemicals we encounter and needs a bit of support to make sure it is functioning efficiently. These are simple steps you can easily add to your daily routine to support your body’s natural detoxification processes.

Here are 5 ways you can easily help your body detox, naturally:

1. Drink more pure water

We know that water is essential for optimal health. But did you know that the simple act of drinking water supports your body’s natural detoxification processes? It does this by flushing toxins and keeping our organs (like the kidneys and liver) functioning properly.

When it comes to water for detoxification, the quality of water shouldn’t be overlooked. Studies show that tap water contains more than 300 unique contaminants, including chlorine, fluoride, pharmaceuticals, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), disinfectant byproducts and more! Unfortunately bottled water typically isn’t any better and also exposes you to hormone-disrupting chemicals leaching into your water from the plastic.

Unless you are sure that the water in your local area is pure, filtering your drinking water with a high quality filter (I love this one) is the best thing you can do to ensure that your water is pure and is supporting your body’s natural detoxification processes.

Quick tip: Carrying your water with you throughout the day is the best way to make sure you’re drinking enough water. I use this glass water bottle, to avoid the harmful chemicals found in plastic water bottles (yes, even the sturdy plastic water bottles!) If you’re not excited about drinking plain water, add some fresh fruit or lemon juice to give it some taste!

2. Use a tongue scraper

This is probably one of my favorite of the 5 steps because it is the easiest and only costs about $6. Using a tongue scraper each morning and night removes the bacteria and toxins that build up on your tongue while you sleep and throughout the day (Ew!). If not removed, they are reabsorbed by the body (and we don’t want that)!

Simply ‘brushing’ your tongue won’t do the trick. Tongue scraping dramatically improves breath and oral health, too! Trust me, you won’t know how you ever lived without it and it will quickly become a habit you won’t want to skip!

3. Start your day with warm lemon water

It’s essential to drink water first thing in the morning to flush your liver. Adding lemon to warm water (I use this squeezer and it makes it really easy) ‘wakes up’ your internal organs and aids in digestion, stimulating stomach acid and bile production. It has also been shown to increase energy and metabolism throughout the day, so you’re not only helping your body detox naturally, but boosting energy as well!

Adding fresh-squeezed lemon juice to your water provides your body with high amounts of vitamin C and antioxidants, both powerful for immune support and cancer-fighting benefits. Extra: adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or fresh ginger root increases detox benefits!

4. Incorporate foods that naturally detox

The best part of naturally detoxing is that it doesn’t involve fasting or depriving yourself! There are many real foods that support detoxification. Some of my favorites are fresh parsley, cilantro, onion, beets, and green vegetables, which are high in chlorophyll. Fresh ginger and turmeric are also great for detox as they have been found to promote digestion and increase metabolism.

5. Dry Skin Brush

Did you know that your skin (your largest organ) is one of the ways your body naturally detoxifies? It does this through the lymphatic system, which is responsible for eliminating cellular waste. When the lymphatic system is congested, we become inflamed and sick, as our body cannot properly get rid of toxins. Our lymphatic system relies on movement to function properly, which is why dry brushing is one of the easiest ways to get your lymph flowing!

Dry skin brushing has been shown to detox the body by increasing blood circulation and aiding in lymphatic flow and drainage. Using a dry skin brush exfoliates skin and greatly reduces the appearance of cellulite, too!

It’s not only important to make sure you’re avoiding harmful chemicals in the products you apply to your body, but that you’re also taking care of your skin and supporting whole-body detoxification by using a dry skin brush.

It’s best to use your dry skin brush daily, before a shower, and always in long sweeping motions to the heart (remember, dry skin brushing is working with the lymphatic system, so the direction does matter.) This is another daily detox tool that you may quickly become addicted to (in a good way) as it leaves you feeling invigorated!

Even if you eat healthfully and choose safer skincare products and cosmetics, we’re all exposed to harmful substances on a regular basis. This is why it is essential to help your body detox naturally by incorporating these simple and daily detox tips!
